Vi har
många lockande bostadsbyten i
Tyskland!

 Dear traveller,
We
do like our scenic routes in Germany. Why not try a Christmas market
one this year? Find out where by reading our special Christmas
markets feature which also includes a chance to win a Christmas
market break to Bavaria and many more ideas for exploring cities
like Hamburg, Dresden or Erfurt and their charming markets. A little
before the Christmas markets open, there’s still time for you to
catch the big 20th anniversary fall of the Wall celebrations in
Berlin. So, whatever you choose, see you soon in Germany!
Enjoy
reading!
Discover Germany’s Christmas
markets along four scenic routes Here
is something for serious Christmas market lovers. The 14 cities of
the "Historic Highlights of Germany" network have put together four
scenic routes, providing a perfect way to visit picturesque German
Christmas markets.

Highlights of Germany

Starting in Trier, the oldest city of
Germany, then following the Moselle to Koblenz and passing by the
many castles of the Upper Middle Rhine valley, this first route
leads via the formerly Roman city of Mainz to romantic Heidelberg on
the shores of the river Neckar.
Setting off in the charming
wine region surrounding Freiburg, the second route takes you via
Augsburg with its singing angels and Regensburg, featuring a
Christmas market at the "Schloss Thurn und Taxis" palace. Finally,
romantic Würzburg and its famous "Residenz" palace mark the end of
this southern route.
Another two routes include Erfurt in
Thuringia and its special version of the famous German "Stollen"
christmas cake, the world’s biggest music box in Osnabrück, a
Christmas festival in Potsdam’s Dutch quarter and the biggest
Christmas market of Northern Germany in
Rostock.
Try
some off the beaten track Christmas markets this year and head for
Regensburg and Coburg.

Coburg in Northern Bavaria, a former ducal
residence, features not only four castles but also a historical
Christmas market right in the city’s old town (from 27 Nov to 23
Dec). Visitors can buy products of regional artisans and witness
traditional handicrafts such as glassblowing, wood carving, basket
making or pottery. Atmospheric carriage rides, mulled wine, local
fried sausages or a quick visit of Germany’s first Historical
Christmas Museum in nearby Neustadt complete your all-inclusive
Christmas experience.
Further South, Regensburg with its
medieval buildings provides another perfect Christmas market
setting. Historic lanes and squares are filled with Christmas
lights, leading to three Christmas markets. Visitors can start with
the "Traditional Christmas market", stroll on to the "Lucreziamarkt"
where artists offer handmade products and end their tour at the
"Romantic Christmas market" in the courtyard of the Thurn and Taxis
Palace.
Competition: To win two-nights in Regensburg for two
people in the new "L’Ostello" hotel (incl breakfast & guided
city walk), simply send an email with your contact details to
RTG@regensburg.de (by 30 October 2009). Time of travel: until 23
December 2009.
From
23 November until 31 December, Hamburg is full of fairy lights, the
smell of roasted almonds and festively decorated Christmas trees.

Hamburg Tourismus | All
over the city centre a wide variety of Christmas markets including
historical, traditional and maritime ones invite visitors to take a
break from the hustle and bustle of the pre-Christmas madness.
Eating baked apples or cinnamon cookies, along with drinking mulled
wine instantly create the perfect Christmas mood.
Visitors
can enjoy the Christmas parade on the main shopping street
"Mönckebergstrasse", admire the fairytale boats and the huge
Christmas tree on the Alster Lake and enjoy international food,
music and arts in various Hamburg museums. If you are looking for
something out of the ordinary, head for St Pauli and discover its
rather erotic "Santa Pauli" Christmas market.
Christmas
market breaks start from EUR 189 per person in a double room for
three nights, including three-days travel card and city and harbour
tour.
The
"Cultural Heart of Germany" with the regions of Saxony,
Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia is a real treasure trove during
Christmas time.

In Saxony-Anhalt, Quedlinburg, a UNESCO
World Heritage Site with over 1.000 timber-framed houses, offers a
special treat for visitors with the "Advent in the Courtyards"
stalls featuring culinary delights. In Wittenberg, magnificent town
houses and the church where Luther preached provide a fantastic
setting for the pre-Christmas bustle.
Dresden in Saxony
boasts the oldest German Christmas market which dates back to 1434
and is known world-wide as the "Dresdner Striezelmarkt". Visitors
will be delighted by Saxon crafts and the famous traditional
Christmas cake, the "Dresdner Stollen". Nutcrackers and revolving
candle-lit pyramids from the "Erzgebirge" mountains nearby are
famous all over the world. In the towns of Freiberg and Seiffen
large electrical pyramids adorn the market places.
In
Thuringia, the Erfurt Christmas fascinates with 200 stalls, a
hand-carved wooden pyramide and a giant ferris wheel, all against
the backdrop of Cathedral St Mary and Severus Church. Every weekend
(from 28 Nov to 20 Dec) medieval times come back to life with music,
handicrafts, food and drinks at Wartburg Castle in
Eisenach.
Giant puppets and domino spectacles in
Berlin
As
the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall is coming
closer, the celebrations in Berlin head for their climax.
From 1 to 4
October up to 49 feet high giant puppets of the "Royal de Luxe"
street performance group will be telling a story of separation and
unification.
While the exhibition "Peaceful revolution
1989/90" on Alexanderplatz is still running until 14 November, the
"Festival of Freedom" celebrations at the Brandenburg Gate are a
one-off on 9 November and will draw millions to the place where it
all happened. Giant dominos will be knocked over, re-enacting the
fall of the Berlin Wall as the final stone falls at the Brandenburg

Reseberättelse från en medlem i
Sydafrika
Yvonne (my wife) and I were very
fortunate to have 3 great exchanges back to back in Europe earlier this
year. These were our 8th, 9th and 10th exchanges ! All three were non-simultaneous.
One couple has been to our Hermanus house already, and the other 2 couples
are coming in February next year.
Firstly, we had a week in an old farm house in the
countryside 30km North of
Bordeaux. An old farm house, but the interior was very
modern and beautiful.

We enjoyed a pool and hot-tub there
as well. We visited all the famous wine estates in the area, and a visit to the
city of Bordeaux and the Island, Isle De Rey,
should not be missed if you are in
that Western area of France.
Next we had a week in an apartment in the centre of Monaco.
This was a small apartment
on the 18th floor, but we found out that the value was € 2.5m,
which is approx. R 28m
!!
Lastly, we traveled to Locarno in
Switzerland. Here we had a brand new apartment right on the Lago Maggiore. The
apartment was so new that the German owners had not even seen most of the
furniture, the last pieces being delivered the day we arrived.
We spent many happy hours on the ferry boat visiting all the small
islands and ports on the
lake Maggiore. I think we
can consider ourselves to be seasoned exchangers, but every new
one is an adventure on it's
own. To us one of the nicest things about Home Exchange is meeting new like-minded
people, as well as becoming friends with them.

We have good contact with all the
people we have exchanged with, and we have offers both ways of extended swaps and
hospitality stays.
What a fantastic way to have a
holiday and make new friends !!
Greetings from a beautiful cool
rainy day in the Hex River Valley
Wade &
Yvonne
